Penang state government denies allegations of beachfront destruction, confirms earthworks are for a public seaside pocket park project.
GEORGE TOWN: The state government has dismissed allegations that green spaces and the beachfront near Lot 4658 in Tanjung Bungah will be destroyed for a luxury development as false.
State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari clarified that the ongoing earthworks are for a public seaside pocket park rather than a private project.
He explained that the state approved Lone Pine Residence Sdn. Bhd.’s plan to construct wellness suites on the site with the condition that the developer also builds a public park on adjacent state land.
The forthcoming park will include jogging tracks, a children’s playground, rest areas, exercise facilities, a seaside promenade and landscaped greenery.
Zairil added that the park approved in December 2024 will be maintained by the developer and is expected to function as a community recreation hub supporting family activities and promoting well-being as Malaysia progresses toward becoming an aging society.
He reiterated that claims of environmental destruction in Tanjung Bungah are malicious, baseless and completely untrue. – Bernama
