RELA reminds public not to obstruct, threaten or scold civil servants performing duties, following viral incident at Johor Bahru bus terminal.
JOHOR BAHRU: The People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA) has reminded the public to respect all civil servants performing their duties in the field.
RELA emphasised that every team member is a civil servant carrying out official duties under relevant department jurisdiction.
“Therefore, any action to obstruct, threaten, or scold them while on duty can be investigated under prevailing laws,” the department stated.
The warning follows a viral incident involving a RELA member who was rudely reprimanded by a member of the public at the Johor Bahru Sentral Bus Terminal, Sultan Iskandar Building.
RELA confirmed the November 4 incident occurred while personnel were assisting in controlling public movement and ensuring terminal safety.
The RELA member involved was rudely reprimanded by a dissatisfied individual after being asked to follow the designated bus service route.
Meanwhile, the department expressed appreciation to the officer involved for remaining professional during the tense situation.
“To maintain and improve service quality in the field, continuous training and guidance will continue to be provided to all members,” the statement added.
Police confirmed they arrested a 31-year-old man allegedly involved in the incident yesterday.
A 58-second video showing a man yelling at a RELA member, believed to be elderly, has gone viral on social media.
The video shows a woman trying to calm the man and has drawn various comments expressing sympathy for the RELA member involved. – Bernama
