Australian PM Anthony Albanese marries Jodie Haydon in private ceremony

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese married partner Jodie Haydon at The Lodge in Canberra, becoming the first serving PM to wed while in office

CANBERRA: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese married his partner Jodie Haydon in a private garden ceremony at his official residence on Saturday.

The 62-year-old Labor leader became Australia’s first prime minister to wed while serving in office.

“Married,” Albanese announced in a single-word social media post accompanied by wedding footage.

In a joint statement, the couple expressed their delight at sharing “our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends.”

The ceremony occurred over a year after Albanese’s Valentine’s Day 2024 proposal, when he said he had found a partner “who I want to spend the rest of my life with.”

The couple wrote their own vows and were married by a celebrant at The Lodge in Canberra.

Albanese’s cavoodle dog Toto served as ring bearer for the occasion.

Guests celebrated with beer from a Sydney brewery following the ceremony.

The newlyweds walked down the aisle to Stevie Wonder’s classic “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours).”

They plan to take a five-day honeymoon within Australia beginning Monday.

Albanese divorced his previous wife in 2019 and has an adult son named Nathan.

The prime minister met Haydon more than five years ago at a Melbourne business dinner.

He secured a second three-year term in May’s landslide election victory.

Albanese first joined the Labor Party during high school before becoming deeply involved in student politics at the University of Sydney. – AFP
