Malaysia maintains fishermen’s fuel subsidy quota at 70 million litres monthly

The government will keep the monthly fishermen’s diesel and petrol subsidy quota at 70 million litres until June 2026 to support the industry

PUCHONG: The government has agreed to maintain the monthly quota for the Fishermen’s Diesel and Petrol Subsidy Scheme at 70 million litres until June 2026.

Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security secretary-general Datuk Seri Isham Ishak said the decision was made to ensure continued support for fishermen.

He stated the move addresses challenges frequently raised by fishermen during nationwide engagement sessions this year.

“According to data, every litre of subsidised diesel can yield nearly 0.9 kilogrammes of fish,” Isham said.

He added that every ringgit of petrol subsidy can produce about two kilogrammes of fish.

Isham was speaking at an Integrity Pact signing ceremony at the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia headquarters.

From January to October this year, 532 million litres of subsidised diesel worth RM665 million were distributed to 10,330 vessel owners.

In comparison, 688 million litres worth over RM1.06 billion were distributed throughout the whole of last year.

“With such a large allocation, the management requires the cooperation of all parties to prevent leakages,” he emphasised.

Isham witnessed the signing of an integrity pledge by five appointed supplier companies.

The suppliers are Petronas Dagangan Bhd, Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd, Chevron Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Petron Malaysia Refining & Marketing Sdn Bhd, and Boustead Petroleum Marketing Sdn Bhd.

The pledge was also signed by three wholesalers managing subsidised fuel orders from suppliers.

The wholesalers are the National Fishermen’s Association, the Sarawak Fishermen’s Association, and Koperasi Kemajuan Perikanan dan Nelayan Sabah. – Bernama
