Tengku Zafrul awaits new government role after MITI tenure ends

Tengku Zafrul confirms discussions with PM Anwar about his future, ready to serve in any capacity as his senatorship and MITI role conclude

KUALA LUMPUR: Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz has confirmed discussions with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim regarding his continued service to the government.

His tenure as Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry concluded today following the end of his six-year senatorship, the maximum period allowed.

“I have to admit that I did speak with the Prime Minister before, and I stated that I am willing to support in any capacity to support the government, to support the country,” he told reporters.

He added that he remains ready to continue supporting the administration while awaiting a formal announcement on his future role.

The Prime Minister had previously informed the Cabinet that it was Tengku Zafrul’s final meeting in his current capacity.

Government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated last week that the Prime Minister indicated Tengku Zafrul would continue serving in another capacity.

Anwar said yesterday that Tengku Zafrul would be appointed to a new position, with an announcement expected on December 3.

Tengku Zafrul made these remarks after a dialogue session titled “Farewell MITI, Hello New Horizons” at Wisma Bernama.

The session was chaired by Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai and attended by the Concorde Club, an informal group of senior editors.

Meanwhile, as president of the Badminton Association of Malaysia, he affirmed his commitment to being more involved in the sport.

He stated his intention to support national shuttlers at upcoming competitions, including the SEA Games 2025 in Thailand.

“I will be going to the SEA Games,” he said, adding he plans to send off the players this Thursday and attend the finals weekend on December 14. – Bernama
