Elon Musk calls for EU abolition after X fined €120 million

Elon Musk says the EU should be abolished after his X platform is fined €120 million for breaching the bloc’s digital services rules.

WASHINGTON: Elon Musk has called for the European Union to be abolished after his social media platform X was hit with a major fine.

The European Commission fined X €120 million on Friday for breaching the bloc’s Digital Services Act.

Musk responded on his X account, telling his 230 million followers that the EU should be abolished and sovereignty returned to individual countries.

“I mean it. Not kidding,” Musk wrote in a follow-up post.

“I love Europe, but not the bureaucratic monster that is the EU.”

The fine is the first imposed by the Commission under the DSA on content.

The Commission said X breached transparency obligations, including the deceptive design of its “blue checkmark” for verified accounts.

It also cited X’s failure to provide access to public data for researchers and to be sufficiently transparent about its advertising.

The penalty was swiftly criticised by the US administration of Donald Trump.

The former president had previously aligned with Musk on efforts to slash the federal workforce before the two had a falling out.
