Selangor forms committee over redelineation of electoral boundaries

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government has set up a special committee to serve as a monitoring secretariat and advisor in the event the Election Commission (EC) proposes to undertake a redelineation of electoral boundaries, the state legislative assembly was told today.
Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim (pix) said a proposal for the redelineation of electoral boundaries was a proactive measure, considering that several constituencies in the state had more than 100,000 voters while some had less than 30,000.
"A redelineation exercise is necessary to strike a balance," he said when replying to a question from Haniza Mohamed Talha (PKR-Taman Medan) who had wanted to know what the state had done in preparation for a redelineation exercise should the EC propose to do one.
Khalid said the committee comprised representatives from non-governmental organisations and relevant experts who were free from the shackles of government.
He said the committee was also set up to ensure the redelineation exercise adhered to the international standard of one man, one vote, one value. The EC had said that a motion would be tabled in parliament to seek the redelineation of electoral boundaries as such an exercise had not been done over the past 10 years. – Bernama
