Company director gets 18 months for tax evasion

PETALING JAYA: A company director was sentenced to 18 months in prison, and fined RM36,000 and a special penalty of RM10,754,826.60 by the Kajang magistrate's court today on three counts of tax evasion for three years of assessment for years 2000, 2001, and 2002.
Magistrate Abdul Jalil Salam Muhamad, in sentencing Lee Yoke Wan (pix), 64, ordered the sentence to run concurrently from the day of sentencing.
Lee, a director of Syarikat Konajaya Sdn Bhd, was charged under Section 114(1)(a) of the Income Tax Act 1967 with the intention to wilfully and with intent to evade tax assessment for years 2000, 2001, and 2002, which amounted to RM3,584,942.20.
Throughout the trial, eight witnesses were called by the prosecution and two by the defence.
