NEW YORK: The New York Police Department (NYPD) will share its best practices in fighting corruption among its officers with the Malaysian police towards enhancing its integrity image.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said NYPD had experienced negative perception problem on its integrity among the Americans 20 years ago, but it managed to overcome it through the implementation of the best practices.
"Malaysian police are currently facing a similar problem, too, although they managed to bring the crime rate down," he told Malaysian media here yesterday.
The best practices stipulated an officer is considered to have committed an offence if they, among others, refused to take report, disputed arrest or summons, (have) criminal association, disagreed with department policy or action, (committed) harassment, misused office computer and (are charged with) off-duty misconduct.
He hoped the best practices learnt from NYPD could help alleviate the negative perception by the Malaysian public of the police, thus enhancing their integrity.
"The people have the perception that the majority of the police are corrupted," he said.
Ahmad Zahid said he had discussed on ways to improve Malaysian police integrity when meeting NYPD senior officials as well as former NYPD chief Charles V. Campisi, recently.
"NYPD has managed to tackle corruption among its officers," he said. – Bernama
