KUALA LUMPUR: A month-long surveillance by Bukit Aman Narcotics Crimes Investigation Department (NCID) and Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING) paid off when they nabbed a 46-year-old Iranian drug kingpin with seven other members and seized 7.4kg of methamphetamine worth RM1.1 million.
Bukit Aman NCID director Datuk Noor Rashid Ibrahim said that eight of them, aged between 22 and 46, were nabbed respectively in five different raids in Kuala Lumpur last Thursday and Friday.
Noor Rashid said that two of those detained are women, of which one is Iranian while the other one is a 23-year-old local woman working in an IT company in Kuala Lumpur.
The others are Iranian men.
They were picked up in Penchala Link Highway, Desa Sri Hartamas, Mont Kiara and Jalan Kuching.
Following the arrest, police also seized seven luxury cars and cash in Malaysian, US and Iranian denominations worth around RM65,000.
Meanwhile, police also scored a major success with the arrest of a 60-year-old South African man and seized 2.1kg of methamphetamine worth over RM200,000 at the KL International Airport last Saturday.
Noor Rashid said that the drugs were sealed and hidden in a biscuit box before police managed to recover it. He added this case revealed the latest modus operandi by a drug syndicate by hiring a member from South Africa to be a drug mule.
All the nine detainees have been remanded to facilitate investigations under Section 39(B) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty upon conviction.
