PETALING JAYA: The widow of N. Dhamendran, who died in police custody, wants the prosecution to appeal against the acquittal of four policemen by a High Court last Friday.
"I am disappointed (with the decision of the court to acquit the accused)," said 27-year-old Mary Maria Soosay, at a press conference held at PKR headquarters here today.
"If it is not them, then who is it?" she asked.
She said according to the post-mortem report, her husband's ears were "stapled" and he had more than 50 injuries on his body.
Dhamendran's family lawyer, Latheefa Koya, said the accused were only arrested weeks after the death.
"The way the investigation was done and the way prosecution was done, this whole charge and the so-called trial, were designed to acquit the cops. It was botched up from day one," she added.
Latheefa called for an appeal to be filed against the acquittal of the four.
The prosecution must file a notice of appeal within 30 days of the judgment date on Dec 13.
Last Friday, High Court judge Kamardin Hashim acquitted Inspector S. Hare Krishnan, 41, Sgt Jaffri Jaafar, 45, Cpl Mohd Nahar Abd Rahman, 46, and Cpl Haswadi Zamri Shaari, 33, saying the prosecution failed to prove "prima facie" case.
They were accused of murdering Dhamendran who was under police detention.
