Opposition MP's question arrest of editors

KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition MPs today questioned the arrests of The Malaysian Insider (TMI) editors on Monday and today under the Sedition Act over an article on hudud.
Teresa Kok (DAP-Seputeh) said the Pakatan Rakyat MPs disagree with the action as it was senseless.
"There is no need to detain them if the police want to take statements from them. This just creates an atmosphere of fear among the media, activists and the public," she said.
She was among 15 Pakatan MPs at a press conference in Parliament today.
Tian Chua (PKR-Batu), who was also present, said the arrests were an assault on the media. "This is a form of intimidation, and to scare the media to toe the line," he claimed.
Mohamed Hanipa Maiden (PAS-Sepang) added that it was a way for the authorities to "harass" journalists.
On Monday, police raided the news portal's office in Mutiara Damansara and arrested TMI managing editor Lionel Morais and two senior editors, Amin Shah Iskandar and Zulkifli Sulong.
Today morning, the news portal's publisher Ho Kay Tat and chief executive officer Jahabar Sadiq were detained soon after being summoned by police for questioning.
