Education ministry targets increasing TVET enrolment to 650,000 students by 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry's target for overall enrolment for the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes is 650,000 students by 2025.
The target is in line with the country's objective of increasing quality TVET graduates under the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015-2025 (Higher Education) that was launched today.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the thrust on TVET would be enhanced by improving the quality of TVET curricula led by industry as well as new collaborations between the ministry and TVET providers and other agencies.
"We are targeting an overall increase in TVET enrolment by 2.5 times to 650,000 (by 2025) with 300,000 registered in programmes undertaken by the Education Ministry,"Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said at the launching ceremony of the blueprint.
The blueprint was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak.
Besides, this, he said the financial sustainability) added the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) would be further improved through a better repayment formula in the form of contingent loans.
"This means that graduates will have to repay their loans once they are earning at a certain level, while the financial resources will be diversified with the creation of an Endowment and Waqaf Fund in institutions of higher learning," he said.
Muhyiddin also said on the management of institutions of higher learning (IPTs), the Education Ministry would move on from being a tight controller to a regulatory and policy maker.
He said the IPTs would continue to be given autonomy based on their preparedness and accountability through five-year performance contract for all public IPTs.
Other thrusts of the blueprint are producing graduates who are holistic, entrepreneurial and balanced; talent excellence; life-long learning; an innovative ecosystem, global excellence; global Internet learning; management empowerment; and transformation of higher education delivery.
These thrusts will support the blueprints five key aspirations which focus on access, equity, quality, capability and unity.
In the effort to ensure the vision of the plan is achieved, Muhyiddin also announced the setting up of the Putrajaya Higher Education Committee, which he himself will chair.
Apart from this, the University Transformation Programme based on the Government-Linked Companies Transformation Programme will also be launched soon.
"The success of the blueprint depends on the commitment of all to implement it. After this, there must be more engagement series with related parties, especially the implementer groups," Muhyiddin said. – Bernama
