Eight arrested after police cripple drug smuggling syndicate

PETALING JAYA: City police scored a huge success after crippling a major drug smuggling syndicate with the arrest of eight people, including two foreigners.
They seized 40.36kg of drugs, including 34.76kg of syabu and 18,651 ecstasy pills worth RM10 million along with drug processing paraphernalia.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Seri Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said the eight suspects were arrested in seven separate raids carried out around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor on May 22 and 23.
The raids were conducted in four locations - Wangsa Maju, Damansara, Seri Kembangan and Sepang.
He said the foreigners arrested were from Sri Lanka and India and were aged between 29 and 43 years.
"We recovered other equipment and tools as well as chemicals that can be processed into syabu and we also located a laboratory used to process synthetic drugs in Sepang," said Mohd Mokhtar at a press conference in Bukit Aman today, adding the police arrested two locals at the laboratory.
He added the syndicate had also marketed the drugs processed in the laboratory to Indonesia.
"We also seized a BMW 3 Series car worth about RM40,000, RM100,550 in cash and jewellery worth RM55,000," Mohd Shariff added.
All the suspects arrested have been remanded for seven days till May 29 and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which upon conviction carries the death penalty.
