Marine police to strengthen ties with Indonesian counterparts

SHAH ALAM: The Malaysian marine police is strengthening its bilateral relations with its Indonesian counterpart to prevent border crimes within the two territories.
Federal Marine Police Commander SAC Datuk Abd Aziz Yusof said the maritime border coordinating group meeting would discuss strategies in preventing such crimes.
These include coordinating patrols, exchanging ideas and information and improving communications, he told a press conference at the Concorde Hotel here where the two-day meeting, which began yesterday, is being held.
Border crimes cover smuggling activities which include human trafficking and narcotics, and so far the situation in both countries is still under control, he said.
He said they would ensure the waters are safe for sea travellers and this was their utmost priority.
Also present was Indonesia's director of Marine Police Baharkam Polri Bridgadier-General Pol Drs. M Chairul Noor Alamsyah, who said the two countries should work closely to protect the borders.
He said they could not prevent crimes at the border 100% but could it by at least 50 % to 60% by exchanging information.
"That is why we need to share information and work closely with each other," he said, adding that with such collaboration, eight persons were arrested in Manado, Indonesia, recently over piracy.
