Malaysians asked to take precautionary measures amidst MERS scares in Thailand

GEORGE TOWN: The Health Ministry has called on Malaysians to take precautionary measures to avert being victims of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), following two confirmed cases in Thailand, the latest being on Sunday.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr. S. Subramaniam said the ministry has taken steps at all entry points to screen passengers for the disease to prevent its spread in the country after a 71-year-old Oman national, who arrived in Bangkok to seek treatment, was tested positive for the virus.
It was reported that the Oman national was currently quarantined at the Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute on the outskirts of Bangkok where he was confirmed for the disease..
'Personal hygiene is crucial, especially washing your hands regularly. Avoid going to camel farms to reduce risk of contracting the virus and do not consume camel milk," he told a press conference after offering Thaipusam prayers at Nattukotai Chettiar temple in Jalan Kebun Bunga together with several MIC leaders here today.
The virus that causes MERS been reportedly found in camel milk.
Dr Subramaniam said travel advisory has also been issued to those going to Middle East.
"Please adhere to the advise given," he said, adding he hoped Thailand health officials will contain the spread of the virus.
The common systems of the disease are shortness of breath, cough and fever.

The World Health Organisation has advised certain groups to be at high risk for severe MERS, especially those with diabetes, kidney failure, chronic lung disease and weakened immune system to take addition precautions of not going near camels or drinking its milk.

* wash hands frequently with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer
* Avoid close contact with sick people.
* avoid visiting farms, markets, barns and places where animals are present
* avoid touching nose, eyes and mouth, especially after touching animals
* avoid consumption of raw or undercooked animal products
