USM invents healing cream made from Haruan fish

GEORGE TOWN: Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has come up with a cream made from the extract of the "Haruan" fish which expedites the healing of wounds.
Its Head of Research, Associate Professor Dr Amin Shah Abdul Majid Malik said the product, Mu-Derm, was formulated through an angiogenesis mechanism.
"Angiogenesis is the process of new blood vessel formation. In the context of Mu-Derm, we have found the most suitable active ingredient from the Haruan fish.
"The mucus found on the Haruan fish consists of unique proteins to encourage an angiogenesis and enable the healing process to be 50% faster," he said.
Dr Amin said the healing cream can also be used by those with sensitive skin and infants, as it is an anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory product.
The three year long research received a RM100,000 grant and also clinched a gold medal at the recent International Conference and Exposition on Inventions by Institutions of Higher Learning (Pecipta 2015) in Kuala Lumpur.
The team from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences led by Dr Amin includes Saad Sabbar Dahham, Dr Aman Shah Abdul Majid, Profesor Dr Gam Lay Harn, Yasser M Tabana and Dr Khadeer M A Basheer.
