KUALA LUMPUR: Police have detained 17 youths to facilitate investigations into the murder of a man who was beaten to death with helmets and motorbike locks during a fight between two groups.
The deceased, a 17-year-old boy, was found lying on the ground in front of a fast-food outlet in Taman Melati here on Sunday.
City police chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said the 4.30am incident was triggered by a misunderstanding.
"The incident occurred in the early hours, in front of a petrol station carpark at Taman Melati here. Checks revealed that the ruckus stemmed from a previous fight in Taman Tasik Tititwangsa which was a week ago. It was a misunderstanding between two groups of motorcyclists. No reports were made from the earlier scuffle," he said today.
The 17 suspects apprehended are between 14 and 20. They have been remanded until Saturday.
"Three of the group members are females while two have tested positive for drugs," Mazlan added.
The police are still searching for 16 more suspects. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder and Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting.
Mazlan said those with information on the case should contact senior investigating officer ASP G. Stephen of the Wangsa Maju police headquarters at 03-9289 9222 or 016-376 7390.
