Book review - One Mile Under

11 May 2016 / 19:17 H.

GIRL meets boy, they fall in love, find obstacles in their way ... You know what happens next. That’s the usual theme in young adults novels and they tend to merge into one big Mills and Boons love story.
However, there are exceptions. And The Siren is one of them. From the author of best-selling series The Selection, The Siren is the tale of a siren (what else?) and her one true love, a human boy and the Ocean (literally) that stands between them.
Together with a few other sirens that form a sisterhood of sorts, Kathlen is bound to serve the Ocean by using her voice to lure humans to their deaths.
She is resigned to her fate until the day she meets Akinli, a kind and handsome boy who treats her like any ordinary girl, even if she can’t ever speak. Soon they begin to develop a connection that Kahlen can’t and doesn’t want to ignore.
I admit that I wasn’t particularly impressed when I first started this book but like the siren it features, it drew me in.
Author Kiera Cass’ outpouring of the feelings, not only between Kahlen and Akinli, but also that of the sisterhood, and even between them and the Ocean, are truly touching and play a part in making this book hard to put down.
Definitely a good choice for a rainy afternoon.
