MCMC issues RM660,000 in compounds to telecommunication service providers

CYBERJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued compounds totalling RM660,000 to telecommunication service companies for failing to comply with the standards set for quality of service and registration of prepaid SIM cards.
In a statement here today, the MCMC said it had issued 12 compounds totaling RM600,000 for non-compliance of the 'Guidelines On Registration of End-Users of Public Prepaid Cellular Services', namely, failing to authenticate the identity of the end-user when registering for prepaid SIM cards.
Two compounds were issued against Maxis Mobile Services Sdn Bhd amounting to RM100,000, and five compounds each against DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (RM250,000) and Celcom Mobile Sdn Bhd (RM250,000), it said.
Each compound is worth RM50,000.
MCMC said it also issued five compounds totaling RM60,000 - three against telecommunication service providers, two against Mobile Virtual Network Operators, and one aginst a broadcast service provider - for non-compliance with the Mandatory Standard on Quality of Service.
One compound was issued to Celcom Axiata Bhd for RM20,000, while compounds of RM10,000 each were issued to Red One Network Sdn Bhd, DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, Merchantrade Asia Sdn Bhd and Husa Network Sdn Bhd, it said.
"The MCMC will continue to monitor and focus on quality of service and the registration of prepaid SIM cards.
"Thus, the commission views seriously the offences involving registration of prepaid SIM cards, and will take firm action, including prosecution of service providers or distributors who fail to comply with the requirements of the Mandatory Standards and MCMC Guidelines, to ensure the rights and interests of consumers are maintained," said the statement. — Bernama
