GEORGE TOWN: The DAP has succeeded in collecting RM1.009 million in public donations to help pay Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's bail.
Penang DAP chief Chow Kon Yeow said the "RM10 in Solidarity With Guan Eng" campaign has come to a close as of 2pm today after it achieved its target.
"DAP Penang wishes to thank everyone who has donated so far, as they have proven that a majority of Malaysians stand solidly behind the DAP secretary-general and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng in the face of blatant political prosecution," he said in a press conference at the party's headquarters here.
The donation drive was initiated yesterday to raise money for Lim who was arrested on Wednesday and charged the following day for abuse of power and graft.
Meanwhile in the same press conference, Lim's political secretary Wong Hon Wai said there will be two events involving the chief minister on Sunday.
The 8am event dubbed as "Walk With Guan Eng" will be held at Lebuh Pantai at 8am followed by an information session with the chief minister at 10am in Dewan Sri Pinang.
