15 Myanmar nationals arrested at Plaza Bukit Mertajam

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The Penang Immigration Department detained 15 foreigners in Ops Ikrar that was conducted at Plaza Bukit Mertajam, Jalan Arumugam Pillai, here today.
Its Deputy Assistant Director Fairuz Ismail said all of those who were arrested were Myanmar nationals including a woman during the operation held between 9.30am and 1pm at the mall.
"All arrested have no valid travel documents entering the country after we had raided two restaurants, a grocery shop, and a barber shop located at the mall," he said here today.
He said, based on the investigation, the foreigners had rented the premises from the locals to operate their own business since a few months ago and employing their compatriots to work with them.
Meanwhile in another operation, the Penang Immigration Department arrested another 15 foreign workers at a steel factory in Kubang Semang, here.
He said the offences included not having valid travel documents, misusing visit passes and over-staying.
Those detained were 11 Bangladeshis, three Myanmar nationals and an Indonesian man, aged between 18 and 50, he said. — Bernama
