Re-delineation illegal, claims Pekan Nenas assemblyman

PONTIAN: Pekan Nenas assemblyman Yeo Tung Siong (DAP) today questioned the Election Commission (EC) over the re-delineation of his constituency which he alleged as "illegal".
He said four housing estates in Pekan Nenas town now falls under the Kukup State Constituency and the 390 voters will have to travel some 8.1km to cast their votes during the 14th general election.
He said these voters took only five minutes to reach their polling stations in the GE13 and now have to travel so far to cast their votes.
"The re-delineation is illegal and on offence under Section 7 of the Elections Act 1958 (Act 19), because the state government did not have any meeting or passed any motion on the re-delineation exercise as required by the Act," he said, adding that the surrounding areas within 2km radius of these four housing estates are still in the Pekan Nenas constituency.
"I don't understand why these four Taman voters have to go to another constituency to vote. Furthermore, none have changed their address with EC," he added.
Yeo said several effected DAP state assemblymen will meet state EC chief to seek clarification next week.
He urged voters who are affected to submit an objection letter to the EC.
He said, from the latest voter list announced by the EC on April 29 this year, showed that 1,789 voters have been removed from his constituency and shifted to other state constituencies such as Kukup, Pulai Sepatang, and Bukit Batu.
