ALOR STAR: A total of 40 telecommunication towers funded by Universal Service Provider (USP) which have been built in Kedah will be upgraded to 3G towers, scheduled by September, the State Assembly was told today.
State Science, Innovation and Information Technology, Communication and High Technology and Human Resource Committee chairman Datuk Norsabrina Mohd Noor said 13 other towers are under construction and 28 others in the process of obtaining approval for construction from local authorities.
"The total number approved so far is 81 towers for Kedah," she said in response to a question from Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir (Independent- Ayer Hitam).
Mukhriz wanted to know measures taken by the government to widen and improve the quality of broadband service in Kedah.
Norsabrina said the state government would continue to work with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to ensure the broadband service in Kedah is good.
"Apart from initiatives by the service providers which are always competing to expand their service, the government also carried out broadband infrastructure development programmes, especially in the rural areas," she added. — Bernama
