GEORGE TOWN: The magistrate's court did not extend the remand for controversial rapper Namewee after the original order expired today.
Court registrar Ahmad Tajudin Zainal declined to extend the four-day remand after police applied for the extension about 12.10pm today.
The 33-year-old singer, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, was then taken to the Northeast district police station.
Later, Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid, in a brief statement, said Wee will be released on police bail.
"He is to be released pending further directions from the Attorney-General's Chambers," he said.
Earlier, T. Tharuma, representing Wee, when speaking to reporters questioned why his client was taken away by police despite the remand not being extended.
"I do not know why he was taken away," he said at the Penang Court Complex.
The singer-director is being investigated for allegedly defiling a place of worship with the intent of insulting.
Wee was detained about 3.30pm at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on Sunday after arriving from Taipei, Taiwan, before being brought to Penang on Monday when he was remanded.
He is being investigated for his latest music video titled "Oh My God" which is believed to be filmed in several places of worship around Penang.
Among the places shown in the video, which shows him and others singing and dancing, include the Tanjung Bungah floating mosque as well as other temples and churches.
Several NGOs have lodged police reports after the video was released.
This is not the first time Wee has courted controversy as he shot to fame on his parody of the national anthem in 2007 while still studying in Taiwan.
He also attracted criticism for his 2009 video rant against national electricity provider Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) after his house in Muar suffered a blackout.
