Three M'sian ministers to attend state funeral for late S R Nathan

SINGAPORE: Three Malaysian Cabinet ministers will be attending the State Funeral for the late former Singapore President S R Nathan here today, according to the High Commission of Malaysia in Singapore.
The ministers are Minister of Transport Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Joseph Kurup, and Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, the High Commission told Bernama.
The state funeral will be held at the University Cultural Centre (UCC), National University of Singapore from 3pm to 5pm.
The funeral service at UCC will be attended by family members of the late Nathan, the President of Singapore, the Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, the judiciary and the diplomatic corps.
Seven eulogies will be delivered, including by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, National Trades Union Congress secretary-general and Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Chan Chun Sing and Ambassador-at-Large Tommy Koh.
The procession will commence at 2pm, passing landmarks of significance to Nathan such as City Hall, Fullerton Hotel and NTUC Centre en route to the UCC.
According to the State Funeral organising committee, more than 20,000 people came to pay their last respects to the late former president.
Nathan, 92, passed away at Singapore's General Hospital at 9.48pm on Monday, three weeks after suffering a stroke.
Appointed as Singapore's High Commissioner to Malaysia in 1988, he was the republic's longest-serving president and was in office for two terms from 1999 to 2011.
He officially stepped down as Singapore's sixth president on Aug 31, 2011 and was succeeded by the current President Tony Tan Keng Yam. — Bernama
