Unrepentant motorcyclists putting children in harms way

KUALA LUMPUR: With schools reopening on Monday, a familiar but dangerous sight can be seen again on Malaysian roads – parents ferrying more than one child on a motorcycle minus helmets.
Checks by theSun in areas around the city today found that many motorcyclists are still endangering the safety of their children besides committing the other usual offences like making illegal U-turns.
City Traffic Investigation and Legal staff officer DSP Shafie Daud warned that under the Road Transport Act 1987 and Road Usage guidelines, motorcyclists could face stiff action if they are caught carrying more than one pillion rider and exposing kids to a dangerous situation.
"Action can also be taken against errant parents under the Child Act 2001," Shafie said.
theSun noticed areas such as Taman Medan, Kampung Pantai Baru and Ampang were hot spots for motorcyclists with the errant behaviour.
