PETALING JAYA: All 31 highways nationwide will be fully upgraded to the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) by next year, said Malaysia Highway Concessionaires Association (PSKLM).
When it is implemented, motorists who pass the 2,288 toll lanes at 177 toll plazas nationwide will pay the toll amount using only their Touch 'n Go card or the SmartTag devices.
At present, PSKLM vice-president Sazally Saidi said, 26 highways have already implemented the ETC system and come Nov 9 noon, two more highways will implement the system.
The two highways are the Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP) and Senai-Desaru Expressway (SDE) in Johor involving a total of eight toll plazas and the toll plazas involved are Penchala, Petaling Jaya Selatan, Puchong Barat, Puchong Selatan, Senai, Ulu Tiram, Cahaya Baru and Penawar.
"Come next Wednesday, all the toll plazas in Klang Valley will have the ETC system," Sazally said during a media briefing today.
He said the ETC system saw a steady increase in road users using the Touch 'n Go cards or SmartTag devices.
"According to the data we have recorded, 93% of the 149 million road users used the ETC system and this figure will increase when two more highways use the system on Nov 9," he added.
As to LDP and SDE using the system starting next Wednesday, Sazally said both will give out a total of 76,000 Touch 'n Go cards to road users for free while SmartTag devices will be sold at a promotional price of RM104.95 including GST at LDP and RM 99 including GST at SDE.
"All Class 1 vehicles will also get to enjoy a 10% rebate for two months from Nov 9 until end of the year at both highways," he added.
