Dr Noraini's election as CWP Chairman underlines confidence of other countries towards M'sia

PUTRAJAYA: Parit Sulong Member of Parliament Datuk Noraini Ahmad's success in becoming the first Malaysian to be elected as chairman of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) is another feather in the cap for Malaysia in the international arena.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said (pix) said as the chairman of the Women's Caucus in Parliament, she was proud of the big victory achieved by Dr Noraini which also proves the confidence other countries had in a Malaysian.

Dr Noraini who is also chairman of Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade), was elected through voting at the 62nd Commonwealth Parliamentarians' Conference in London, United Kingdom yesterday.

During the voting session, Dr Noraini garnered 53 votes beating Joyce Watson of Wales who received 15 votes, Poto Williams of New Zealand (10 votes) and Linda Reid from Canada who received nine votes.
With the victory, she will hold the position as the new chairman of CWP for the next three years, replacing the Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament Rebecca Kadaga who nominated Dr Noraini for the post. — Bernama
