SKYPARK Terminal became the first Malaysian airport to collaborate with a ride hailing service, recently signing a four-year agreement with Grab Malaysia.
The partnership was sealed at a ceremony held at the SkyPark Terminal in the presence of Subang SkyPark Sdn Bhd executive director Tan Sri Ravindran Menon and Grab Malaysia country head Jaygan Fu.
At the event, Fu said that the four-year agreement will see a Grab Kiosk stationed in the arrival terminal for the convenience of business travellers and tourists to book rides conveniently without the hassle of configuring their phones or obtaining a local data line. “Within minutes of arriving at the arrival gates, their Grab rides will pull up waiting for them,” he said.
SKYPARK PARTNER
During the press conference, Fu shared Grab Malaysia’s reason to partner with SkyPark Terminal.
“Since its inception in 2008, SkyPark Terminal has grown. From achieving passenger counts of 300,000 in their first year to a sizable three million mark in 2015 – the growth is monumental. “Furthermore, with the various events happening on our shores, such as the renowned Southeast Asia Games 2017, the traffic to and from Subang SkyPark would no doubt increase by folds. With that, we had no doubt that Subang SkyPark would be the ideal partner and location for us to provide safe, convenient and above all, pocket friendly rides to and from the airport,” Fu said.
CONVENIENCE ABOVE ALL
Menon viewed this collaboration as an opportunity to further live up to the terminal’s tagline – Above All Else Convenience.
“This collaboration will add value to SkyPark Terminal’s overall offering to our guests and make their commute to and from SkyPark Terminal much more convenient.
“Over the years we have seen our footfall increase consistently andwith our projections for 2017 showing a continuation of this positive growth, partnering with Grab will allow us tomeet this growing demand,” Menon said.
The partnership is part of Subang SkyParks expansion effort development plans for which includes a new terminal and an electric-run double track rail line between Subang and Skypark terminal, he added.
CO-EXISTING WITH OTHERS
With the collaboration in place, one would wonder if this partnership will be met with some obstacles. However, Menon cleared doubts as he viewed the collaboration as an opportunity that can bring benefits to many.
“I think we are here to co-exist with the other services, especially with Grab’s Grab Taxi option. So, I think it is a matter of time before we all become one. We have to move towards the future as the world does. We cannot be living in the past but we need the past to be in the present and the present to be in the future.
“So, I think what we are doing now by getting into this partnership, is that we are getting ready for the future. We will coexist even when the rail station comes about. People think that the traffic will drop but we disagree. Rather it will get even better because more people will use the train and go to nearby places. We don’t see an issue here, rather an opportunity to grow together and co-exist.” Menon said
Fu pointed to Grab’s Flash feature which brings taxis and cars onto a platform. “When you trigger the app, there will the Flash button on the bottom right corner where if you press it, the nearest ride-hailing car will come to your service. If you are around this area and there are many taxies nearby, by using the feature, the taxi will come to pick you up. “At the end of the day, it’s all about customers’ preference and we believe that the pie is big enough for everyone to co-exist,” He said.
Fu also announced that the partnership with Subang SkyPark Terminal will kick-off with a promotion which is already on-going until Jan 31. The collaboration also unveiled Grab Malaysia’s GrabCar six-seater MPV, which provides convenience for customers in larger groups or with a lot of luggage.
