RM6 million in losses for Terengganu schools hit by recent flood

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu Education Department has estimated RM6 million in losses incurred by flood-hit schools in the state recently.
Its director, Shafruddin Ali Hussin said 133 schools in eight districts suffered damage to infrastructure, furniture, equipment, textbooks and electrical wiring.
"The amount, however, is much lower than over RM18 in losses incurred during the massive flood in 2014.
"This is the result of the improved standard operating procedure implemented by the department to minimise losses due to floods which hit Terengganu each year," he told Bernama, here, today.
Continuous heavy rain from the night of last Dec 31 had caused flooding in Hulu Terengganu, forcing 25 schools to postpone their opening of the 2017 new school session which was scheduled for Jan l.
Most of the schools affected were in Hulu Terengganu, Besut and Setiu which were the hardest hit by the flood this time.
Shafruddin said the report on the estimated losses had been forwarded to the Education Ministry for further action to enable repairs to be done.
"The department wishes to record its appreciation to all parties involved in the gotong-royong to clean the schools hit by the flood which helped to speed up the re-opening of the schools.
"We are also thankful for the clothes, shoes, school bags and stationery contributed to the flood victims which lessened the financial burden of the affected families," he added. — Bernama
