TANAH MERAH: Five Burmese Star tortoises worth RM50,000, believed to have been smuggled, were among items seized in Operation Mandarin in Bukit Bunga last night.
Kelantan Border Control Agency (Aksem) commander Mohd Asri Yahya said the tortoises from Myanmar were found in an express bus travelling from Kuala Terengganu to Alor Star.
"The five Burmese Star tortoises were found in a box meant for Mandarin oranges. There was no permit and nobody claimed to be the owner."
Mohd Asri said the case was handed over to the Wildlife Protection and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) for further action.
They also seized four cosmetic products worth RM65,500 which were not registered with the Ministry of Health and arrested six illegal immigrants from Bangladesh (3), Vietnam (2) and Indonesia (1).
Operation Mandarin was held in conjunction with Chinese New Year. — Bernama
