Zaid Ibrahim joins DAP (Updated)

PETALING JAYA: Former Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has officially joined the DAP.
He said he chose the party because of the progress it has brought to Penang and also because he supported the party's fight against corruption.
"DAP has brought not only development but has also created jobs for the people and built affordable housing for the less fortunate," he said.
Zaid also attacked PAS for its failure to develop Kelantan in his speech announcing his move to join DAP.
He said PAS has not been able to solve simple problems such as rubbish collection and flash floods in Kota Baru and the state.
"I also aim to prove claims that the predominantly Chinese Opposition party is not anti-Malay," Zaid said at a press conference held at his home here.
Also present was former prime minister and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Tan Sri Sanusi Junid, DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang and its acting national chairman Tan Kok Wai
Before being sacked from Umno, Zaid was the law minister during the administration of Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in 2008, but he resigned from the post the same year as a protest against a spate of arrests under the Internal Security Act 1960.
The year after, Zaid joined PKR, and then contested the Hulu Selangor by-election in 2010. He lost to deputy education minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan.
He quit PKR later that year and formed Parti Kesejahteraan Insan Tanah Air (Kita). Zaid resigned as KITA chief in 2012.
Zaid anticipated that his decision to join DAP would draw allegations that he has become anti-Malay, pointing to attempts to paint the party as a Chinese chauvinist bloc.
Speaking at Zaid's announcement, Mahathir said he hoped Zaid's membership with DAP would last longer than his stint with other Opposition parties.
He said the culture of party hopping must be eradicated and replaced with loyalty, a crucial quality needed for any political party to succeed.
"I hope he will stay in DAP a little bit longer. The problem is in this country, we have a race of frogs. These frogs, they like to hop here, hop there.
"When I try to catch one, they've already hopped somewhere else. I think we need to eradicate this culture," Mahathir said jokingly.
