JOHOR BARU: Johor Baru Selatan (JBS) district police chief Assistant Commissioner Sulaiman Salleh reminded parents that it is an offence for parents to let their teenaged children out unsupervised.
He said this offence under Section 33 of the Child Act 2001 for negligence and not supervising their children carries a penalty of up to RM5,000 or two year imprisonment or both upon conviction.
Sulaiman was commenting on an accident involving a group of 30 to 40 cyclists at Jalan Lingkarang Dalam about 3am today.
A car heading towards Skudai rammed into the group and went turtle. Eight cyclists were killed and eight were injured.
He warned those who modify their bicycle that it is an offence. JBS had confiscated 37 illegal modified bicycles last year and 17 this year.
Meanwhile, the state government expressed hopes that families and next-of-kins of the victims will be patient and resolute in facing the ordeal.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin urged all quarters and agencies to endeavour to prevent a repeat of the incident.
He said the state government would also hand over funeral expenses to the families of the dead teenagers.

He said contributions to ease the burden of the affected families would also be made by the Johor Islamic Religious Council.
In a separate statement, State Health and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said five of the eight injured victims admitted to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) had broken legs but were fully conscious.
He said the conditions of two more victims were unstable due to blood clots in the brains and they were being operated on, while another, currently being treated at the Emergency Department, had a cut on the head and was fully conscious.
"My condolences to the victims involved. I hope parents can supervise their children especially at night. Family security should be our priority," Ayub said.
