Scoring a perfect 10

RECENTLY, Huawei held one of its largest product briefings in Malaysia to talk about its latest series of smartphones that will be hitting our shores very soon.
These include phones that were already announced at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona several weeks earlier.
The star of the event was the Huawei P10 series of smartphones said to be available at the tail end of March. The series comes almost exactly a year after the release of its predecessor, the P9 series.
Huawei is currently the number three mobile phone vendor in the world, and in Malaysia, it is at number two.
Its bid to reach the top spot in Malaysia this year begins with the P10 series which includes the entry level P10 Lite, the mid-range P10, and the premium P10 Plus.
Building on what it has achieved with the P9 series, Huawei introduced the 5.1in P10 and the 5.5in P10 plus.
Both phones run the EMUI 5.1 (Huawei’s own flavour of Android 7.0) on its own in-house processor – the Kirin 960 Octa-core 2.4Ghz, and feature Huawei SuperCharger and Machine Learning Algorithm.
Both phones also feature cameras – front and back – that are co-engineered with Leica, and a new premium body design that, while not unique, certainly stands out from other Android phones.
However, that is where the similarities between the two phones end.
The P10 Plus is fitted with 6GB of memory, 128GB of expandable storage, a 3,750mAh battery, and a screen capable of displaying 2560x1440 resolution.
Meanwhile, the P10 has 4GB of memory, 64GB of expandable storage, and a screen capable of displaying 1920x1080 resolution.
And while both phones feature Leica co-engineered camera, the P10 shares the same aperture lenses (f2.2) with the P9, while the P10 Plus sports the more advanced F1.8 lens.
In a press conference after the briefing, Huawei’s Smartphone Product Line Marketing senior director Justin Zhang said that the P10 Plus is rated IPX3, which means it is resistant to light splashes.
The P10 Lite, on the other hand, has the Kirin 655 Octa-core 2.1Ghz processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable storage, a 5.2in full HD screen, a 12MP rear and 8MP front camera, and a 3,000mAh battery.
According to Huawei, these devices will be available for pre-order from Huawei Experience Stores, Lazada, and Vmall on Thursday and will be available for purchase on March 31.
However, they will only be available in prestige gold and graphite black.
This is disappointing since one of the most exciting features of the P10 series is its range of colours, which Huawei touts were developed with Pantone Colour Institute.
However, Huawei Malaysia deputy country director Matthew Ng said that additional colours, including dazzling blue, would be available between mid-May and June, and will be based on customer demand.
The Huawei P10 Plus, P10, and P10 Lite will retail for RM3,099, RM2,499, and RM1,299 respectively.
Also announced at the product briefing was the Huawei Nova Lite, and the Huawei Watch 2 and Huawei Watch 2 classic.
The Huawei Nova Lite is an entry-level dual-glass design smartphone that is almost a feature twin to the P10 Lite, except for its 3GB memory and 16GB storage, while the Huawei Watch 2 and Huawei Watch 2 classic are Android Wear 2.0 wearables.
No prices nor release dates for these products were announced.
