PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB) today clarified that it flies to three other destinations in India besides Chennai International Airport and Mumbai.
MAB chief executive officer Peter Bellew said the other destinations they are fly to are Bangalore, Hyderabad and Delhi.
"The airline has seven weekly flights to/from Hyderabad and New Delhi respectively, and 14 weekly flights to/from Bangalore, Mumbai and Chennai," he said in a statement.
Peter was clarifying statement made by Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz on Tuesday that limited number of flights between India and Malaysia is among the challenges in attracting Indian tourists.
Peter said although the airline's permission to the main cities in India are currently filled, they are looking for ways to cooperate with Indian carriers to ensure additional tourists to Malaysia.
"Even though recent equalisation of passenger service charges for Asean customers had led to a 15% increase in customers, we are looking forward for more equalisation on Indian and other international routes as it will assist the 51 airlines at KLIA," he added.
Nazri had said the total number of Indian tourists to Malaysia last year had dropped 11.6% due to lack of flights to the country.
He was quoted saying that MAS is not aggressive about flying to certain places, and there are places that MAS used to fly to, which have since been closed.
