Lawyer claims trial to cheating charges

PETALING JAYA: A lawyer was charged with two counts of cheating RM300,000, at two separate magistrate's courts today.
J. Shanti, 47, claimed trial to cheating Teh Jit Keong, 46, to invest to obtain a medium cost flat which does not exist.
Shanti is alleged to have induced Teh to hand over two cheques, totalling RM150,000, which was deposited into her own bank account.
The offence was allegedly committed at Oasis Square, No. 2 Jalan PJU 1A/7A, Ara Damansara on July 6, 2016.
Magistrate Zaki Asyraf Zubir granted RM7,000 bail with one surety and fixed May 4, 2017 for a mention.
In another magistrate's court, Shanti claimed trial to cheating Saw Lae Kuan, 31, into investing to obtain a medium cost flat (which did not exist) and inducing Saw to deposit RM150,000 into her bank account.
The offence was allegedly committed at the same place and date.
Deputy public prosecutor Natasha Chin Le Jy suggested RM10,000 bail with one surety.
Lim Yoi Ping, counsel for the accused, said Shanti is a lawyer and she is married with four children.
"There is no possibility for the accused to abscond," said Lim.
Magistrate Fadzlin Suraya Datuk Mohd Suah granted RM8,000 bail in one surety and ordered the accused to surrender her passport.
Fadzlin also fixed May 8 for case mention.
Deputy public prosecutor Fazeedah Datuk Faik appeared for the prosecution in the first case.
