DUNGUN: Forty diving enthusiasts have gone beyond the norm to express their patriotic spirit in conjunction with National Day 2017 by planting the Jalur Gemilang, and the Terengganu state flag on the seabed of Pulau Tenggol here.
Among the 40 government and private agency staff and media practitioners was Mohd Abdul Wahab Mohamad, 47, who is speech and hearing-impaired.
The father of four said his impairment was not an obstacle for him to join the special activity as his interest in diving surpassed the challenges that he had to face.
"I started diving in 1995. Of course I was fearful at first. But I challenged myself that I could do it and prove that a differently abled person like me can be as good at it as any normal person.
"This is the 20th time that I have joined this Merdeka diving activity and I am very proud to plant the jalur gemilang on the seabed of my birthplace," he told Bernama when met.
Employed by Syarikat Scuba Network Dungun, he said he had gone on diving expeditions to a number of countries such as Australia, Vietnam and Thailand, aside from local diving spots.
The interview was conducted in sign language with the assistance of Mohd Abdul Wahab's friend Zeeyad Rahman. — Bernama
