Activists rescue 1,200 dogs to be slaughtered for Yulin festival

ANIMAL activists intercepted a lorry that was transporting 1,200 dogs to a slaughterhouse in Guangzhou's Baiyun District. The canines were destined for the pot at the annual Yulin Dog Meat Festival when they were rescued on June 19.
Two activists spotted the lorry laden with the dogs and called for backup. When it stopped at a petrol station, the activists locked them in with their cars.
The demanded to see the health and transportation certificates for the animals, according to a report from NetEase. The local authourities were summoned when the driver couldn't produce those documents.
After a lengthy standoff involving the activist, police and the lorry driver, the dogs were unloaded and sent to an animal shelter.
The dogs were cramped into small cages that were stacked up in the lorry. After unloading the animals, activists discovered that at least 20 had died in transit, from injuries, hunger and thirst.
The Yulin Dog Meat Festival in Guangxi began yesterday.
