KUALA LUMPUR: Traders in three Ramadan bazaar locations in the city – Jalan Masjid India, Bangsar and Bandar Tasik Permaisuri in Cheras – were today given 100 25-litre containers to deposit their used cooking oil in an effort to educate them about the need to preserve the environment.
According to Alam Flora Sdn Bhd chief executive officer, Datuk Mohd Zain Hassan, the effort by its subsidiary company DRB-HICOM Environmental Services Sdn Bhd was aimed at educating the traders on the 5R concept of refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle and recovery.
"For each kilogramme of used cooking oil deposited with us at the Alam Flora recycling centres either in Kuala Lumpur or Putrajaya, the public including the traders can get RM1.20.
"Recycled cooking oil can be converted into biodiesel which can be used by heavy vehicles such as tractors and buses," he told reporters after distributing porridge and the containers to traders in Jalan Masjid India, here today.
Among the recycling centres which will buy the cooking oil are in Precinct 18, Precinct 9, Precinct 14 and Precinct 16 in Putrajaya, as well as in Jalan Bunus 6 in Kuala Lumpur. — Bernama
