Bandar Malaysia MRT construction blast claims life of first victim

KUALA LUMPUR: One of the three foreign workers who suffered injuries in the explosion at the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station construction site in Bandar Malaysia yesterday has died.
MMC-Gamuda, in a statement today, said the other two workers were still in a critical condition.
"The workers seeking treatment at the Kuala Lumpur hospital were initially reported to be in stable condition at the point of admission before their condition worsened later in the night.
"One succumbed to the injuries. Two others are in critical condition," the statement read.
It added the cause of the incident will be made known when the investigation is fully completed.
In yesterday's incident at about 5pm, three Bangladeshi workers were seriously injured and two of them lost their legs while another suffered injuries on the hands and legs.
The three general workers were carrying out housekeeping works outside the immediate work area at the Bandar Malaysia South MRT site.
Some 25 City and Fire rescue personnel with five fire engines from Hang Tuah, Pudu and Tun Razak stations were rushed to the site.
City police chief Commissioner Datuk Amar Singh had confirmed that an old bomb from World War 2 had exploded when construction work was being carried out.
Sources meanwhile revealed that there was no foul play during the incident.
The sources said the incident was caused during excavation work where the excavator hit a buried live World War II mortar bomb.
"The three men were standing nearby during the incident," they added.
Attempts to obtain comments from police have proved futile till press time.
