Best facilities for flood victims at relief centres: Uggah

KUCHING: The state government will ensure all flood victims evacuated to relief centres are provided with the best of facilities, said Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
Uggah, who is also the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee chairman, said so far, he was satisfied with the facilities provided to evacuees after visiting two relief centres this morning.
"I am satisfied with the management of the flood relief centres. We will also ensure adequate supply of food and drinks for the victims.
"Besides that, the Sarawak State Health Department has also stationed doctors to look into the health of the evacuees," he told reporters after visiting the flood relief centre at Masjid Darul Mustaqin, Kampung Buntal, here today.
The relief centre houses 125 victims from 20 families from Kampung Buntal Lot.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson of the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee said eight relief centres are open compared to five this morning, housing a total of 554 victims from 158 families.
"The three newly opened relief centres are Sekolah Kebangsaan Haji Bujang Rangawan Putin, Sadong Jaya (84 victims), Masjid Kampung Seruyuk, Simunjan in Samarahan (80 victims) and Dewan Lintang Baru, Kampung Lintang Baru in Serian with 64 victims," the spokesperson said.
In Asajaya, Sarawak Civil Defence Director Kolonel (PA) Mohtar Samat said this latest round of fllooding in the state was due incessant heavy rain from Thursday and the king tide phenomenon.
He said the areas affected by outside the Sarawak River Barrage, which was built to alleviate flooding problems.
"Nevertheless, APM personnel are on standby at high risk areas as according to the Sarawak Almanac, high tide measuring 6.1m is expected to occur at 8pm today," he said. — Bernama
