Burglar caught in act by shop owner

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A jobless man believed to be a member of a shop break-in gang was caught red-handed by the owner of a bubble tea joint while he was breaking into the premises at Jalan Icon City, Bukit Tengah here early today.
Central Seberang Perai District Police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said the 36-year-old suspect was nabbed at about 1.30 am.
"The shop owner was alerted about the incident based on the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras available at the shop, via his mobile phone before going to the premises with a friend," he said here yesterday.
Upon arriving, he said, the two men spotted the culprit at the payment counter and immediately nabbed him. Police arrested and seized RM200 from the suspect.
Initial investigations revealed the suspect had an accomplice in his 30s.
"The accomplice was believed to have been manning the door but fled the scene after realising the arrival of the owner," he said.
Nik Ros Azhan said the investigation also revealed that both the suspects were believed to have been involved in a series of shop break-ins around the district over the past few months.
The suspect had two criminal records for drug-related offences and remanded for seven days to facilitate investigations, he added. — Bernama
