PADANG TERAP: The Education Ministry intends to improve the Ulul Albab syllabus with the emphasis on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Its minister, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid (pix) said the empowerment is in line with the government's approach to see the spiritual and intellectual aspects of students grow in tandem.
"The programme will produce human capital who not only understand and apply the al-Quran teaching in daily life, but also to solve problems by mastering various fields of STEM.
"It is also in line with the modern world. Despite having great profession like engineer or doctor, they are able to master religious knowledge," he told reporters after officiating the Heritage and Community Service Club of Kedah Association of Former Members of Kemas, here today.
However, he said, so far the ministry is focus in increasing the schools' safety aspects especially to avoid the unwanted incidents in Islamic religious schools.
On another matter, he said there is no coercion for schools to participate in the National Sports Day which falls on the Deepavali week.
"I know there are complaints regarding this matter. We (ministry) encourage teachers and students to join the programme but if they are unable to attend, we will not force them," he said. — Bernama
