ALOR STAR: A criminal believed to be a firearms and drug smuggler was shot dead by the police at an intersection at Kampung Weng Dalam, Baling, yesterday.
Kedah police chief Datuk Asri Yusoff said in the 4.25pm incident, a police team on patrol approached a Toyota Vios car which stopped by a road side in the area and asked the car driver, aged 41, to get out of the vehicle for inspection.
However, he said, the suspect, who was still in the car, fired several shots at the police and then fled, while firing several more shots at the police.
"The police returned fire and the shots hit the suspect on the chest and head," he told a media conference here today.
Following a search on the suspect and the car, he said the police found a semi automatic Norinco pistol, eight transparent packets believed to contain heroin and two sets or false vehicle registration number.
Asri said following the incident, police went to the suspect's house in Kampung Selarong, Perak, and found a home-made bomb, various types of live ammunition and 250 gm of syabu.
Police also detained the suspect's wife, a Thai national in her 30s, he added. — Bernama
