KUALA LUMPUR: The top leadership of Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan) has endorsed its Penang chief Teng Chang Yeow to contest against DAP strongman Lim Kit Siang in the 14th general election (GE14).
Party President Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong said the decision was made after Lim had challenged Teng to contest against the former in the upcoming election.
"I know for a fact that we have announced last year that Teng will no longer be contesting to make way for new faces.
"But things have changed, Lim had challenged him (Teng) and the party will endorse Teng.
"Teng is not new in politics, he has served Gerakan Penang very well," Mah said during a press conference after the party's central committee meeting held at its headquarters here today.
The dispute between Lim and Teng started when the former had asked the latter on which seat is he going to contest.
Teng then responded by telling Lim that he would challenge the latter "at a DAP stronghold".
Teng, who is also Penang Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman also said that he wanted Lim to make an announcement to commit himself to contest in Penang before deciding on the constituency they should contest.
Teng contested in Padang Kota in 2008 and Bukit Tengah in 2013, losing to DAP and PKR candidates respectively.
On the Gerakan elections machinery, Mah said the party is ready to mobilise its power for the upcoming GE14.
He added that the party had formed a coordination team to overlook its machinery's work at all of Barisan Nasional (BN) contesting seats.
