Berlin (dpa) - Germany's fan fest sites emptied quickly on Sunday as tens of thousand of supporters who had turned up to celebrate left disappointed following the national team's 1-0 defeat to Mexico at the World Cup.
At Berlin's Brandenburg Gate fan fest, most of the more than 10,000 fans, many in the German colours, left soon after watching the defeat in Moscow on a giant screen. Only a couple of groups of Mexicans wearing sombreros and carrying flags were left cheering.
It was a similar scene in other cities. Around 20,000 fans had gathered to watch the game at a site in the St Pauli district of Hamburg where the mood was not helped by intermittent heavy showers.
Around 15,000 fans also watched the game on a giant screen in Frankfurt's Commerzbank Arena. In Mexico City, celebrations began at Zocalo Square in the historic city centre where fans waved fans and shouted "Viva Mexico." Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto congratulated the team via Twitter on "a great game."
