KENINGAU: The government has provided RM8.3 million as loan for start up capital to nine cooperatives in Sabah throughout 2016 said Pensiangan member of parliament Tan Sri Joseph Kurup.
Kurup who is also the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department said RM360,000 was approved as assistance for development to 15 cooperatives in Sabah.
"This shows the concern of the government to see cooperatives develop and expand in the country and later contribute to the economic growth," he said when opening the Pelancaran Koperasi Rukun Tetangga (RT) in Sook, yesterday.
Kurup said the government would continue to assist cooperatives to increase their revenue, not only to its members, but also the economic development of the country.
However, all efforts will be in vain if the cooperatives do not take their own initiatives to seize opportunities that come by or those provided by the government.
Meanwhile, Kurup said there were 7,778 Rukun Tetangga sectors throughout the country while Sabah recorded the highest number with 1,002. — Bernama
