MALACCA: Malacca Umno Liaison Committee chief Datuk Seri Idris Haron failed to defend his post as head of Umno Tangga Batu division in the party elections yesterday.
Idris, who has held the post for two terms, obtained 151 votes and was defeated by Tangga Batu Umno division committee member Datuk Seri Mohamad Ali Mohamad who garnered 353 votes.
Meanwhile, former Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Abu Bakar Mohamad Diah defended his post as deputy head of the division with 337 votes, defeating his challenger, Pantai Kundor state assemblyman Nor Azman Hassan who obtained 168 votes.
Paya Rumput ex-assemblyman Sazali Muhd Din also defended his post as division vice head, winning 284 votes, defeating his two challengers Zaid Zakaria (119 votes) and Zakaria Mohd (107).
Mohamad Ali said he would uphold the trust given to him by the division's delegates and strengthen Umno to gain the confidence of the people in the party.
"I and the other leaders will work with all parties to strengthen Umno, including with Datuk Seri Idris. What is important is for us to close ranks within Umno," he said. — Bernama
