PETALING JAYA: In an effort to instil the patriotic spirit and environmental awareness for the upcoming 60th Merdeka celebrations, the Great Heart Charity Association and its partners will be organising the 2017 Great Heart Earth Warriors Day.
Themed "Love our Country, Keep it Clean!", the event will involve a mass street clean-up environmental project at four different districts in the Klang Valley.
The association's partners include student groups, local councils, and corporate sponsors.
"This year's Great Heart Earth Warriors Day is jointly organised with student groups from four different universities and colleges, namely Sunway University, Reliance College, Global Edu Training Centre, and UCSI University.
"It will be held at the townships of Klang, Kuala Lumpur, and Balakong on Sept 9, and at Bandar Sunway on Sept 30, with each location being spearheaded by one of the student groups respectively," the association founder and president Franky See Swee Choy said in a statement.
The association started the Earth Warriors Project initiative in 2014 on a small-scale environment awareness campaign that managed to gather over 200 villagers in the town of Jenjarom to help spring-clean the village prior to Chinese New Year.
"The project, which has gained traction with the assistance of local councils, involved other townships like Pandamaran Klang, SS15 Subang Jaya, Sekinchan, and Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam over a two-year span. It has inspired over 4,000 participants to work together in cleaning up our environment in each township.
"The project serves as a reminder for people not to dispose garbage irresponsibly, which causes all sorts of public nuisance such as dengue and flash floods due to clogged drains.
"The impact is greater because participants have first-hand experience cleaning up the mess left by irresponsible people," he said.
Choy called on all Malaysians, irrespective of age, gender, and race, to join in the event.
Wipro Unza, Sunway TES and Universal Memorial Park are sponsors for the event.
